What to Expect

We welcome visitors, groups, researchers, and enthusiasts to get in touch with the Upper Heyford Heritage Centre. Whether you’re planning a family day out, arranging a school or group visit, or wish to learn more about our Cold War aviation history, our friendly team is happy to help.

  • Duration: 3+ hours
  • Walking level: Moderate; most areas are step-free (see Accessibility below). We provide mini-bus transport around the flying field between destination sites.
  • Highlights: Hardened Aircraft Shelter, Battle Command Post, Weapons Storage Area (nuclear bomb store), flightline views.
  • Guides: Tours led by volunteers including former personnel who served at Upper Heyford.

When and where do Airbase Tours start and finish ?
Airbase Tours start and end at the RAF Upper Heyford Heritage Centre. Admin sign-in is from 9:30 am. The Tours start by 10:00 am. Tours are 3+ hours long but often overrun.
Can I bring food & drink with me ?
Please do. Food & drinks are available from The Heyford Hotel and Sainsbury's onsite. Bottled water is available to purchase on the tour 'bus.
Can I cancel or change my Airbase Tour booking ?
Places will be offered for resale. If successful you will be offered alternative tour dates or a full refund.
Are Airbase Tours suitable for children ?
There is no lower or upper age limit but the tours are 3+ hours long and involve a lot of standing and listening to guides.
What should I wear?
Comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing; parts of the tour are outdoors.
